George Washington Carver Fellowship

Program Description
The George Washington Carver (GWC) Doctoral Fellowship is awarded annually to encourage students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Hispanic-serving institutions (HSI), or Tribal colleges, who have demonstrated superior academic achievements and abilities, to attend Purdue University. Recipients of this fellowship are doctoral-seeking students who aspire to a career as a professor/researcher in higher education. Purdue University President, Martin C. Jischke, initiated the George Washington Carver Fellowship in honor of this great African-American educator, researcher, and innovator.

Qualifications
GWC Fellowship recipient must be:
  • a graduate of an HBCU or HSI , OR have attended a Tribal college for two years;
  • a graduate of a U.S. accredited high school;
  • aspiring to a career as a professor in higher education;
  • admitted to the Graduate School ;
  • pursuing a doctoral degree in agriculture, engineering, or the sciences;
  • demonstrate superior academic achievements and scholarly abilities.

  • The selection committee utilizes the following guidelines in determining the status of a HBCU , HSI , or Tribal College , and guidelines established by the National Science Foundation in determining the eligibility of an academic discipline.

    Nomination Materials
    The academic program will submit the following materials to the Fellowship Office, Graduate School, YONG:
    1. a statement of support from the department head or graduate committee chair;
    2. a ranking by each department of its nominees and an explanation of the ranking.
    3. transcripts;
    4. a statement of purpose; and
    5. a completed diversity essay. The diversity essay (500 words or less) should respond to this statement:
    Describe your leadership, work experience, service experience, or other significant involvement in racial, ethnic, socio-economic, or educational communities that have traditionally been underrepresented, and how these experiences would promote a diversity of views, experiences, and ideas in the pursuit of research, scholarship, and creative excellence.

    Award
    The tenure of the award is four years, contingent upon satisfactory progress as determined by the academic program. The Graduate School provides

  • Tuition scholarships
  • Medical insurance supplement
  • Technology fee
  • 1The minimum stipend level is $14,000; however, the academic program determines the actual stipend level.

    Registration Requirements
    Recipients must:
  • be admitted to Purdue in a degree-granting program;
  • maintain a valid e-mail address with the Fellowship Office;
  • submit an annual Academic Progress Report;
  • enroll for at least nine credits in the fall & spring sessions and enroll for at least six credits during the summer session. Fellows who are not registered during the summer session will not receive a stipend in May, June, and July.
